94,000 BSNL, MTNL employees seek VRS

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): Over 94,000 employees of state-run BSNL and MTNL have applied for the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) with eight more days to go for its closure, according to a government official.

According to sources, BSNL's 80,000 and MTNL's 14,000 employees have applied for the VRS.

"MTNL's 13,988 employees have applied for the VRS. Of the total 18,200, 16,372 are eligible for it. I am expecting another 500 to opt for the VRS. Our target was 13,500", MTNL chairman Sunil Kumar told IANS.

Of the 1.65 lakh, nearly 1,00,000 BSNL employees are eligible for the VRS. The effective date of voluntary retirement under the present scheme is January 31, 2020.

The Union Cabinet had last month approved a plan to combine MTNL, which provides telecom services in Mumbai and New Delhi, and BSNL that services the rest of the nation. It also approved a package for the ailing PSUs to cut employee cost by offering the VRS on the Gujarat model to the employees of 50 years and above.

The total of ex-gratia (as per the Gujarat model) and admissible pension for the remaining period of service doesn't exceed 125 per cent of the salary that the employee would have drawn on the date of voluntary retirement.

The payment for ex-gratia on VRS (Rs 17,169 crore) and preponed pensionary liability (Rs 12,768 crore spread over 10 years) is to be supported through budgetary allocation. The ex-gratia on VRS is to paid in two instalments of 50 per cent each during FY20 and during Q1FY21.

The rescue package includes infusion of Rs 20,140 crore for purchase of 4G spectrum, Rs 3,674 crore for GST to be paid on spectrum allocation, companies raising Rs 15,000 crore in debt on the sovereign guarantee and the government funding Rs 17,160 crore VRS and another Rs 12,768 crore towards retirement liability.

Very good move. Privatization and outsourcing will increase efficiency and reduce corruption. Government should not involve in commercial business. It should focus on taxation, defense, transportation, education and civil supplies. The basic business of Govt. is to pass laws, make policies and enforce them.

Instead of competing with private mobile service providers, BSNL & MTNL could have survived by improving their original services, by providing better landline services such as free caller Id. facilities, reduced rates for STD / ISD during nights and holidays, internet lines for PC & Laptop users and so on.

VRS is a blessing in disguise but losing jobs is a burden on the bread earner in the family.

He has to be extra cautious in handling the funds to have steady income to sustain life.
Without regular work people become lazy and rusted in mind and falls in bad habits like alcohol,
share market, advancing funds to others on higher interest rate. Banks are the best option.

This is nice. 20,000 Crore to get rid of dead woods in telecom sector. To understand how bad it is, visit BSNL office and one would know.
Add to this 50,000 Crore relief to the private operators, chiefly Airtel, Vodafone and Jio.
70,000 Crore of tax payer money wasted.

Getting rid of Air India also probably will cost to the exchequer similarly I guess.

If Jio can provide better services for a cheaper price, what's wrong in it at the end of the day people are going to get the benefit, because of Jio all of us have got the benefit.

80% of BSNL receipts were used for paying salary to its employees.....how can such a company survive unless it is a govt company? Tax payers money should not be used to revive such useless company with useless staff...

Had BSNL employees have put in WHOLE-HEARTED EFFORTS IN THEIR WORK , this would not have happened!
Pathetic service, no service oriented approach, delay in rendering service and many more pushed them to this. Last week, when I was in Temple town - Subramanya, the mobile signal is ZERO. When asked the local people, they said that its quite common when there is no electricity - no signal. How do the pilgrims or residents manage there??

Will you please explain why the Government deliberately didnt give 4G license to BSNL despite BSNL repeatedly asking for it.

Why private players like Jio, Airtel got it so easily.

Why no level playing platform was provided to BSNL?

Also are you aware that the amount of loan owed by BSNP is pittance compared to what Jio, Vodafone etc owe to Indian banks.

Dont be a bhakt and ask the right questions.
