Chikkamagaluru: Over 150 fall ill after consuming Prasadam at shrine

Chikkamagaluru, Nov 25: Over 150 fell ill after consuming Prasadam distributed on the occasion of Deepotsava of Makkala Chowdamma Gudi shrine at N R Pura in the district on Saturday November 23.

On the occasion of annual festival of lights (Deepotsava), special puja was offered to the goddess on Saturday morning, and food by way of Prasadam was distributed to devotees. Kesari Bhath, Pulao and curd rice were served.

The food items which remained even after distribution in the morning were distributed to devotees who participated in the evening Deepotsava the same day at 9 pm. At around 10 pm, two children complained of vomiting and dysentery. They were hospitalized. Later, several more suffered from similar symptoms, and some of them fainted. By late night, over 60 had suffered and the number swelled by Sunday morning. However, by Sunday evening, everyone regained health and returned to their homes safely.
