Kasargod, Aug 23: Police have nabbed the main accused behind Periya branch North Malabar Rural Bank robbery on Saturday August 22 and recovered gold weighing 1.153 kgs and Rs 4 lac.
The accused has been identified as Krishnamurthy (25), son of Lakshmanan of Peerumedu Vellapuram in Tamilnadu. Hosadurg deputy superintendent of police Habeeb Rehman, who is leading the special investigation team, said that the accused was arrested at 4 am on Saturday at Chalukunnun of Kannur. It has also come to light that a seven-member-team from Kuruva division of Tamilnadu is behind the bank robbery.
Krishnamurthy is involved in robbery from the past seven years and has earlier looted three banks in Tamilnadu. He was also arrested once for one of the bank robberies and later continued bank robbery after being released on bail. The accused has invested Rs 18 lac from the loot from Periya bank to buy a flat in Bangalore and also land at Neelayannur of Puducherry in Tamilnadu.
It can be recalled here that the bank within the Bekal police station limits was looted of Rs 3 crore worth gold jewellery and Rs 6.75 lac from its safe room on June 18.
