Mangalore, Aug 21: On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister of the country, the late Rajiv Gandhi, the department of mechanical engineering of P A College of Engineering, in association with the NSS unit, celebrated Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas in a befitting manner, on Thursday August 20.
The events of the day started with the formation of a human chain, in which the students displayed the slogans related to energy conservation and the need for using renewable energy. The other events held were essay writing competition on the topic ‘Clean India, Green India – What is my Role?’ and a written quiz, followed by poster-painting competition on the topic, “global warming”. About 270 students actively took part in the events mentioned.
The formal function organized on this occasion, was presided over by Prof Ganesh Aithal, in-charge principal of the College. Dr K V Rao, director (training), Regional Science Centre, Pilikula Nisargadhama, was the chief guest. Prof M A Muliyar, dean, academics, was also present on the dais. The Akshay Urja theme song was played on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr K V Rao elaborated on the need for harvesting the renewable energy in the coastal region. He dwelt upon different techniques for tapping solar, wind and energy from the biomass. He asked the students to think innovatively and implement ideas to reach the needy people for energy self-sufficiency. He suggested to the students to make use of the project funds given by the ministry of renewable energy through KREDL. The chief guest also gave away the prizes to winners of various events held for the day.
Prof Shankar K S, coordinator, welcomed the gathering. Prof C V Pujar, head, mechanical engineering department, spoke on the relevance of the day. Coordinator M A Baig presented a brief report about the celebrations. Prof Prashanth Pai, NSS programme officer, proposed the vote of thanks.
