Mangaluru, Nov 16: Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Attavar as its social initiative is conducting the fourth year of Bal Shalyakriya Mission (BSM) Mangaluru; a free advanced paediatric surgical programme in collaboration with Peedh Parai International, Houston (USA) and Bantwal Ananth Mallya Charitable Trust whereby children upto 16 years with untreated complicated surgical conditions requiring very high surgical expertise are screened freely by Orthopaedic and Pediatric surgeons at KMC Hospital Attavar.
Medical superintendent of KMC Hospitals Mangaluru, Dr John Ramapuram stated that all the identified children will be operated and treated free of cost during the BSM week from February 3 to February 7, 2020 at KMC Hospital, Attavar by a team of Expert Paediatric surgeons from United States of America and KMC Hospital Attavar.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) being the major sponsor in terms of diagnostics and facilities, the cost of medicine, consumables as well as food and nutrition cost for children undergoing surgery will be borne by Bantwal Ananth Mallya Charitable Trust.
As it is the fourth successful year of Bal Shalyakriya Mission in Karnataka, recommendation and permission from the district health officer has already been obtained and also forwarded to the health minister and principal secretary, department of Health and Family Welfare of Karnataka State for information.
Dr Sadashiva Rao, associate professor of Paediatric Surgery, KMC, Mangaluru stated, “We see many parents who cannot afford the advanced treatment for their children due to their financial constraints and suffer the pain their kids go through as well. However, with this noble mission, all such families should come forward and avail the services. Patients suffering from Anorectal malformation, Hirschsprungs disease, Vesicoureteric reflux, Puj obstruction, Thoracic congenital anomalies any mass/ccam/cle and all types of unattended / correction paediatric surgery cases can be referred for the surgery.
Dr Surendra Kamath, head of the department – Orthopaedics explained the orthopaedic symptoms in children which can be treated under this programme. He said that kids have been screened from remote areas like Shivamogga, Kodagu, Udupi, Chikkmagaluru, Uttara Kannada, Davangere along with Kasaragod and Kannur districts in Kerala for BSM 2020.
Dr Jayateertha Joshi, assistant Professor of Pediatrics Surgery, stated, “KMC Hospital Attavar is one of the most advanced comprehensive pediatric care centres with medical, surgical, oncology services under one roof. We strive to provide patient centric services so that medical facilities are accessible to each and every patient needing medical attention."
The department has well-equipped Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units which will help to treat newborns to teenage children. There is a dedicated Pediatric Oncology ward with robust infection control practice, pediatric surgical support, social worker and data manager to cater to children with cancer.”
Jeethendra Nayak Trustee of Bantwal Ananth Malya Charitable Trust sought support from the members of the print and electronic media for the social initiative by reaching out to the public and aggrieved parents whereby any children suffering from anomalies and deformities can take free assessment at KMC Hospital, Attavar between Monday to Friday 10 am to 12.30 pm till January 21, 2020 to get free treatment from experts.
There was a testimony by the parents of the children who have successfully undergone treatment under the previous Bal Shalyakriya Mission.
