Bengaluru, Nov 13: The judgment concerning seventeen unqualified MLAs is pronounced by the Supreme Court. Well known actor and progressive thinker Prakash Rai lambasted against the discontent MLAs soon after the verdict.
“The court verdict is such that a snake should not die and a stick should not break. Kannadigas should give a verdict in the elections that cannot be forgotten by the MLAs. It is our responsibility,” he stated in his tweet.
Curtains are down for the controversy of unqualified MLAs. The Supreme Court has stated that those MLAs may contest in the by-elections.
The court in its verdict stated that the work of a speaker is limited to accepting resignations. “The resignations should be considered if those are voluntary. MLA's seats are vacant whether the resignations are invalid or accepted. Therefore, elections are inevitable”. The court has rejected the speaker’s direction that invalid MLAs may not contest elections.
Speaker Ramesh Kumar stated that the MLAs are not entitled to contest elections till 2023.
“The disqualification of concerned MLAs remains till the by-elections are conducted and not till the expiry of Vidhan Sabha term. The term of the disqualification of MLAs cannot be decided. They can become ministers if they contest elections and win,” stated the Supreme Court.
