Gadag, Nov 8: A couple who had entered inter-caste marriage was brutally killed at Lakkalakatti village near Gajendragad in the district. Those who lost their lives happen to be Ramesh Madara (29), and his wife, Gangamma (23).
Ramesh reportedly belonged to a caste that is considered inferior to that of his wife Gangamma. The local society does not accept inter-caste marriages. In spite of opposition from family members, Ramesh and Gangamma had fallen in love and got married. They had thereafter lived at Shivamogga and Bengaluru.
Six months ago, after they grew confident that they may be accepted by the villagers as their marriage had lasted over four years, they came back to their native place, Lakkalakatti, and began to reside there. It is said that three brothers of Gangamma, Shivappa, Ravi, and Ramesh Rathore, who were nursing animosity against the couple for disrespecting their belief system, attacked their house, broke open the door of the house, and killed the two by dropping stones on their heads on Wednesday November 6 night.
It is said that Gangamma belonged to Lambani community while her husband was a Dalit. They are survived by two children.
