Udupi: Man accused of chain snatching, thefts, arrested -Stolen items recovered

Udupi, Nov 6: The police personnel from Kaup and Shirva police stations arrested a person identified as Arvind Narayan Naik (34), resident of Sirsi, on November 1 on charges of snatching and stealing gold ornaments and valuables. Naik has been accused of committing these acts in areas falling within different police station limits.

Geetha Sujan Kumar (54) resident of Padoor, was cutting vegetables grown in her garden behind her house on October 11, 2019 at about 12 pm when a stranger came through the garden. He tightened a cloth the neck of Geetha and snatched her wedding chain weighing three and a half sovereigns from her neck before fleeing through the vegetable garden.

Geetha suffered injuries in her neck region and on her hands as she resisted the thief's effort to yank away the chain.

A police complaint in this connection was registered in Shirva police station. Kaup police circle inspector is conducting investigation in this case.

Police team led by Kaup CPI and Shirva station police sub inspector, who arrested suspect Arvind Narayan Naik produced him in the court. He has been remanded in police custody. Investigations have continued.
Police have recovered jewellery robbed in the incident and jewellery stolen by the suspect after entering the house through window of a house near Padoor temple. Cases of theft in Malpe station, Sirsi station, Kumta station besides maintaining contact with suspects in jail and making threatening telephone calls demanding ransom were registered against him in the past.

The police have recovered a Karimani chain worth Rs 95,000, gold bracelet worth Rs 34,700, gold finger ring worth Rs 3,500, gold ear rings worth Rs 7,000 and Vivo mobile phone worth Rs 6,000 from him. The total value of jewellery and mobile recovered from the suspect works out to Rs 1,46,200.

The operation was conducted under the directions from district superintendent of police, Nisha James, and additional DSP Kumarchandra, and guidance from K Krishnakanth, assistant SP Karkala sub division, under the leadership of Mahesh Prasad, circle police inspector, Kaup circle by Shirva station PSI Abdul Khader, probationary PSI Sadashiva Gavaroji, DCIB team’s Suresh, Shivananda and staff Pravin Kumar, Rajesh, Sukumar, Ravikumar, Damodar and Raghavendra Jogi.
