Udupi, Nov 2: “The light of Deepavali festival drives away ignorance and evil powers. The wick burns itself to provide light to the world. Let us set aside personal selfishness and work for the progress of society,” said Udyavar Government Pre-University College lecturer, P Dinesh Kumar.
He addressed a gathering as chief guest in goodwill of Deepavali celebrations held at Udyavar Billava Mahajana Sangha auditorium under the leadership of Sauharda Samiti of Udyavar, St Francis Xavier church and in association with community members belonging to various religions.
“There are centers of devotion for various religions in Udyavar which was once the capital of Vijayanagar Samanta empire. Religious harmony is maintained here since the beginning. It is an example for other districts in the state. The light of Deepavali shows the light of harmony among the people of Udyavar,” he said.
Salihat group of institute’s vice president, Mohammed Idris Hoode said that all of us believe in the Almighty. “The important characteristic of the Almighty that we believe in is that he loves us, those who are created by Him. Therefore, if we inculcate that characteristic in our lives, there will be harmony among us. Let us light up society giving up anger, selfishness etc among us,” he said.
Well known author and teacher, Alwyn Danti said that Udyavar is a village of peace and harmony. “Harmony is routed in the people as close as Church and Mosque here. Let us celebrate Deepavali together. We share sweets among neighbors during feasts of our religion. But different political parties during elections spoil the harmony among people for their political gains,” he said.
Goodwill committee Udyavar president, Wilfred D’Souza chaired the programme. Committee honorary president, Udupi deanery chancellor, Fr Stany Lobo conveyed his best wishes.
Mahajana Sangha president, Pratap Kumar and gram panchayat president, Sugandhi Shekar were on the dais. A cultural programme was held later by local talents.
