New Delhi, Aug 10: Senior Samajwadi Party leader Kamal Akhtar on Monday demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the spiralling prices of essential commodities, though the party supports the government in parliament.
"The prime minister should resign...The prices of basic commodities are getting out of reach of the common man; this is because the present government prepares the budget for industrialists rather than common man," Kamal Akhtar, Rajya Sabha MP of Samajwadi Party, told IANS.
He said it was "shameful that our prime minister tells us that the prices of basic commodities can further increase".
Akhtar blamed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for deceiving the aam aadmi (common man).
"This government came to power on the promise of working for aam aadmi, but the government has completely neglected the aam aadmi. It is working for the industrialists and rich of the society," he said.
The Congress-led UPA government has been facing criticism from other political parties as well on the same issue.
The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold nationwide protests against price rise on Tuesday.
