Mangaluru, Oct 24: As Deepavali, also known as Diwali festival, is approaching, in the interests of protection of public property and health and property of individuals, and to minimize environmental pollution and noise pollution, use of firecrackers which make sounds in excess of the limits prescribed by the Supreme Court has been banned as per environment protection rules 1999, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board release said.
Bursting of firecrackers has been banned from 10 pm to 6 am. They cannot be used in areas notified as silent zones.
"Use of firecrackers in small streets in towns and cities gives rise to chance of harming the residents there besides exposing them to dangers from explosions and fire. Therefore, the people should use green firecrackers only in open grounds. Diwali should be celebrated as a festival of lights without using firecrackers," the release added.
