George Fernandes Files Nomination for Rajya Sabha by-poll

Patna, July 30 (IANS):  Barely able to walk, a frail George Fernandes, helped along by Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leaders, Thursday filed his nomination papers as a party candidate for a Rajya Sabha by-election from Bihar.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of JD-U, who had been held responsible for Fernandes' defeat in the Lok Sabha polls this April-May, said that there were "no differences" with the veteran politician.

Fernandes, 78, was accompanied by JD-U leaders and party workers when he filed his papers.

The by-poll was necessitated by the resignation of JD-U national president Sharad Yadav following his election to Lok Sabha from Madhepura.

"I simply asked George Fernandes whether he was keen to go to Rajya Sabha, he said yes and I invited him here to file his papers," Nitish Kumar said Thursday.

Kumar said that there was no differences with Fernandes.

The JD-U in March this year denied Fernandes a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections on grounds of his "advancing years and failing health".

Fernandes contested as an independent candidate from Muzaffarpur in the Lok Sabha polls and was defeated.

Why donot we have a retiring age in politics, like in all other professions, may it be Govt or a Private job..!! Mr. Fernandes has been a good worker & Konkan railways still salute him for his vision project.. It is time he takes a retirement n gracefully, accepts his age n ill health to his stride. If you can not manage yourself, what will you do as a leader? Can you not give way to youngsters who are anxiously waiting to get in to active politics?? I hope some times, soon, our Election Commission of India, along with our President of India n Constituent Bodies, bring in an ammendment where as to qualify a candidate to contest in any elections. This can be minimum / maximum age, qualifications, credibility of candidates, maximum terms that one person can serve, in order to give ample opportunity to the more deserving youngsters, in the years to come. Why is it either old politicains or their siblings get tickets?? God Save our Democracy...!!!

It is same George fernandes elected by people so many times before(By people with different surnames). If some fernandes is loosing it could be because of non performance and not because of his surname.

I knew George Fernandes of yesteryears. The giant killer - when he defeated S.K. Patil from my constituency in Mumbai. Though, I was not eligible to vote, we convassed for him, young boys of 10-15. Then he rose to be a powerful union leader with powers to stop Mumbai at a moments notice. Then a terrorist tab as a leader in Baroda Dynamite case. But he never had the guts to contest again from Mumbai, because he abundoned his constituency. He contested from North India, every time a new constituency, never helped the people that deserved. Last elections he lost his deposits even. Now he should not take part in things that he cant make justice to. His health has deteriorated, his personal life is a mess, he is better off leading a quiet life.

Though I have highest respect for him but this is greed. A man who can''t walk and stand straight - i dont know what the heck he will be doing. Maybe he can''t travel to Delhi even. Sort of granting his last wish i suppose.

George Fernandes is really a honest man. He is old and needs peaceful and comfortable living. His party leaders should not abandon him instead help him to remain happy by giving him all the support he needs. In fact, all the parties should support his nomination to Rajasabha. All the best Mr. Fernandes.
