Udupi: What made Fr Mahesh D’Souza to take drastic step?

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Oct 12: Udupi diocese is in shock after losing a young, energetic and people-friendly priest. Fr Mahesh D'Souza was the first priest to be ordained when the diocese of Udupi was newly formed.

The parishioners of Shirva Church, students of Don Bosco School and the Christian community are deeply upset that the priest ended his life. Fr Mahesh had served as the principal of some known institutions in diocese of Udupi like Mount Rosary Church Kallianpur, Milagres English Medium School, Kallianpur and Don Bosco CBSE School, Shirva. Students and staff call Fr Mahesh as a strong person.

Students of Fr Mahesh are posting their memories with him on social media. Fr Mahesh had also conducted Jeevan Jyothi Camp for the students in Shirva parish recently. The camp had ended a few days back. In Milagres Cathedral, he worked as an assistant parish priest and also worked as spiritual director of ICYM. He continued to serve as the assistant director of Shirva parish.

Talking to Daijiwold.com, an office bearer of ICYM Shirva, said, "My recent conversation with Fr Mahesh was on October 11 evening. We had organised a training programme for Small Christian Community members. He was very supportive to all activities of ICYM. He had many dreams for the students of Don Bosco CBSE School. He worked with full dedication to improve the school.”

The staff of the Don Bosco CBSE School found it hard to believe his shocking death. A two-day English speaking training programme was conducted for teachers of Don Bosco CBSE School. Fr Mahesh had taken active part in the same. He had organised a training camp on October 11 in the church as well. He maintained good relationship with teaching and non-teaching staff. Fr Mahesh had worked day and night to get CBSE accreditation for Don Bosco School.

Fr Mahesh D'Souza was a person with many talents. He was a good organiser, resource person, spiritual counsellor and a musician. He worked hard to make Don Bosco School a top one in the locality. His next dream was to start PUC in the institution.

"He was a very good human being. He always wanted others to be happy. He always respected the elders and communicated humanely with younger ones. Sadly, after his tragic death, many rumours about him are being spread,” says one of Fr Mahesh’s acquaintances.

The suicide came to light when assistant parish priest Fr Ashwin Aranha went in search of him as he had not come for dinner. After searching all over the pastoral residence and church, he saw that the lights in school office were on. When Fr Ashwin Aranha went to check, he found out that Fr Mahesh had ended his life.

"He was very sensitive person. Some people, due to their personal issues, had grudge on him and were trying to spread negative news about Fr Mahesh. He was a very good priest. Recently, he visited Bengaluru frequently to ensure arrangements are made for a special child to attend exams. He was always saying that there is no one who understands him or his work. He was working relentlessly for the betterment of the institution," says a priest who was very close to Fr Mahesh.

Today, diocese of Udupi is grieving that it lost a good priest and a multi-talented personality. Reasons may be anything but every problem can be solved by discussing with others. Ending life is not the only solution to problems.

Whatever it might be being religious no one as right to claim I have build this institution / I have worked for the betterment of the society. Religious shouldn't have any love towards materialistic aspects. You are bound only to serve the altar and the church. Suicide is not the ultimate solution for all the problems. RIP to the departed soul of Fr. Mahesh. Heart felt condolences to the bereaved family members.

He is a human as much as you are. There is a way to inform someone about the transfer not through a third person. This clearly indicates that there was something wrong in his approach . Fine he was a young priest and in the learning phase. Feedback, appreciation, discussion - is a way to communicate something. I clearly can say that the parish priest was jealous of his fame and wanted him to be transferred. Shame on Dennis. 50 plus year old priest jealous of a 36 year old budding priest. To conclude you say as a religious person one cannot take ownership of insititution but as a religious one can conspire to dethrone someone??. Great live our catholic church!!!

I hope the priests and Bishops treat their own clergy as human beings. We the laymen are very understanding and open minded to tell people that the priests are also human beings. Now it's the turn of the priests and bishops to treat their own men with respect and concern. Church needs a change in the mindset.

One thing I have noticed is we mangalorians are good in judging people and expert at giving advise. This is the reason we dont come up in life. We think about ourselves and only ourselves. If we r little rich we think we r the owners of others. We dont care for small people because of our ego that we r rich.
I know we cannot improve but at least give a try and change.

My intention of writing these comments is to give my perspectives on issues of the present day that has bearing on the priests. Hope these comments will be taken in a constructive way for the betterment and to initiate some thoughts in this direction.

    1. The primary role of priests is to serve the lay people in religious matters ( the sacraments).
    2. Priests also are involved in education and helping towards betterment of the parishners, youth and society in general.
It is my sincere opinion that many priests want to build, construct, develop building related to the church, school, college, hall etc. Primary reason for doing this appears to be engaging in activities to keep themselves busy, gain popularity, a sense of achievement, to climb the ladder of achievers.
At time I have seen that many of them loose the purpose of these activities and do it to satisfy their human instincts. Feeling a sense of attachment and ownership to the schools church or place then becomes their comfort zone,
It is high time the church authorities like the archbishops realize this phenomena and take steps to initiate the revised role of the church in present times.
The present times are such - digital technologies have disrupted the age old human practices of meeting people and discussing issues problems in person. Rather misunderstanding are more over whatsapp, rumor mongering is more, the list is endless.
I hope the Shepherds ( the bishops) also are made to undergo a refresher course on the changing dynamics of society in this digital world.

Priests have taken up this choice of joining priesthood leaving their families possessions and near and dear ones. Sacrificing a lot in many ways in their lives and working hard for the people in many difficult situations. Taking up higher responsibilities and not looking into their own comforts. They leave all their trust in their superiors, Provincials and their area Bishops. Just in the name of vow of obedience they should be made to dance to the tune of their superiors, Provincials and their area bishops. They also must be listened to and consulted before passing diktats. The time has come for a change or it might take more lives for their stubborn Superior's to come to understand the present reality. The vocations to priesthood have become very less and it is a set back for the families who might be planning to send their children to priesthood. Nobody wants to lose their children. It's time to practice what you preach. Feel sad for Fr. Mahesh. The people who are responsible either directly or indirectly for this must be brought to book.

Any person in a higher position needs to be given a minimum a three months notice to relieve from his present responsibilities. How can a priest with such a high position be told to go on a transfer with immediate effect. Are they on a government duty.

We grew together since childhood. As far as I know him Fr. Mahesh is very lovely and humble person. He is strong, hard working but sensitive. Always smiling and charming guy. It is very hard for me to accept he is no more. His parents and brothers are very humble and lovely people. I have seen growing him in our village Moodubelle. Very active, multi-talented, and very bright student. Very friendly with everyone. Among 3 sons his parents Peddi baab and Matti bai sent to do Gods mission but now he could not fulfill due to some unbearable reasons. At the end Mother Father lost their beloved son, bothers lost their loving brother. It is really very painful truth that is he is no more. After his death we can speak and advise so many things but it is all useless but one should really think all priests and nuns are human beings like me and you. Like Fr. Mahesh there will be many priests who are suffering for one or other reason. I would say rather ending up life like this they should return back home when they feel things are not working in right direction. And our society should understand and accept them. So that we can save many priests and nuns rather losing them like this.
Secondly Bishop of Udupi diocese must take this matter more seriously and take care of all assistant priests of all parishes and make sure they are treated well in the parish. Moreover constructing the commercial buildings must be strictly stopped to avoid unnecessary pressure and tension of priests.
Fr. Mahesh with heavy heart I say Good bye my friend and rest in peace. Will meet again in heavenly abode. Missing you always.

The sad tragedy of Rev. Fr. Mahesh has dawned upon the bereaving family, the community of Shirva parish, and most importantly all the faculty and the students of Don Bosco school with hundreds of young students.
The students have had the privilege of listening to Fr. Mahesh for so long, and the shocking sentiments will remain as a shock in these students. They are all young but sensitive. These students deserve lot of consoling as well as counselling. The students as well as the faculty members need our comforting as well as consoling so that they overcome the wounds sustained from this sad tragedy, and also wipe out the sad memories from the rest of their life.

May God help us all in this sad moments of life for the Shirva parish and the Udipi Diocese.

    RIP Father Mahesh,

we as a lay man always think religious life is easy life and painless, worryless that proved it false now,
we can understand one religious Priest or Nun work under tremendous pressure with lots of sacrifices which I have seen in my own eyes.
we as a normal layman if at all we are facing any pressure from our piers have the option to quit or just gave up and walk out but it is not so easy to a priest or nun, only one in a 1000s just resign and walks out, that also lengthy process involved.
we can imagine how much you were suffering!
    Rest in Peace dear Fr.Mahesh,
Only God's Grace is enough for you.

If at all Fr. Mahesh has committed suicide he could have contacted Fr. Denis and express his sadness or issues with him. Now all rumours are making rounds and this is very bad. Hope truth will prevail and may his soul rest in peace. May Lord grant his family strength to bear his loss. Fr. Mahesh such a active priest and it's hard to believe that he committed suicide.

During Jesus time also happened because of these educated degree holders pharaisees.,teachers of the law Sadducees, they do not allow you to do the good work.for them every one should be under them!!
If anyone cannot live or find it difficult he or she can come out from religious life and suicide is definitely not a solution
Abide in the teaching of Jesus rather than working under pressure or as a slave under highly educated degree holders hands

Good lesson for everyone : Attachments, need to be recognised and depression are not from God but evil one (Not spiritual but worldly). What is important is that what God thinks of an individual and not an individual thinks of himself.

Always love those negative thoughts as and when they come to surrender them to God for Him to take care of them and to guide oneself overcome them over the time, through His Angels or some good Samaritans as, God is Love.

Same time God is merciful and tolerance so always show mercy and tolerance towards thy neighbors.

Sad to see depression and suicide among religious community.
A common theme in the news is “no one understood him
Or his work” the key element is being a religious ( a priest, brother or Nun) is obedience, poverty and humility. You don’t get to choose your destination, it’s chosen for you. You follow the will of Hod and your superiors .

It should be made part of religious training. Also these young men should not be forced to join religious orders when they are in 12th grade.

If these facts are true, then this is a problem with dynastic priesthood, they need to be trained as a monastic priest like Jesuits (chastity, poverty and obedience) I see that our young priest and becoming priest need to go to Bellary Diocese or other north Karnataka to serve the poor people in their intial stage or after ordained, then they come to know poverty, obedience , then only we can be successful Priest who can transform the society in whatever situation.

Jesus is our Shepherd. By calling priests “Shepherd” we put undue burden on them to take care of the flock. Each one of us should be in communion with the Lord and read His word to solve our own problems thereby eNabling the priests to do their calling . He is the only True Shepherd who can take care of His Flock.
