Bengaluru, Oct 3: Chandan Banik (65), a native of Kolkata stands arrested by the city police. The arrest was made based on a complaint that he has been encashing the disability of visually impaired people for selfish ends.
Sharat H N, son of Hulikal Nataraj, known for awakening people against those involved with cheating the people by using magic in the name of miracles, is a visually impaired person. Sharat came to know through social media that Banik had invited visually impaired persons to meet him at a hotel at Magadi road here. He also had promised to provide them equipment to handle their condition.
Sharat says he went to meet Banik along with his parents at around 5.30 pm. He said that there were several people waiting to get treated, and that Banik collected Rs 2,500 from each of them as consultation fee but failed to issue any acknowledgement or receipt. He told the people that he would import the equipment from a foreign country.
Sharat, who made some research, came to know that Banik had taken a number of people for a ride in Gujarat and other states. On enquiry he also found that the company concerned does not have any dealers in India. He also said that the equipment referred can help only those who face minor visual impairment and not helpful to others.
After finding out these things, Sharat complained to Vijayanagar police here, who arrested Banik.
