Bantwal, Oct 1: In an incident which happened on Monday September 30 morning at Ballalbettu in Rayi village in the taluk, a leopard that had entered the village to hunt dogs fell into a well.
The leopard, after falling into the well attached to the house of Monappa Bangera, could not come out. The forest department staff and firemen, in a joint operation, rescued the leopard and safely set it free in the protected forest.
In the early hours on Monday, the leopard that had chased a dog had fallen into the said well which does not have protective platform. The family members, who heard incessant barks of the dogs in the area, came out and saw that a leopard had got deposited into the well. The leopard also was roaring, unable to come out.
The forest department in the taluk and fire brigade personnel together undertook an operation that lasted till Monday afternoon. The operation in which a ladder was lowered into the well and the animal was caught by spreading a net above, became successful finally. After the veterinary officer conducted medical examination of the leopard, it was transported to the protected forest.
Bantwal range forest officer B Suresh, deputy forest officer Preetam, and other staff along with fire station assistant station officer Tajeev, along with other staff, got involved with the rescue.
