Mangaluru, Sep 22: Of late, along with dengue fever cases, more cases of viral fever, stomachache, dysentery etc are being referred to hospitals in Dakshina Kannada district. It is said that some private hospitals seek admission of patients into hospital and demand blood transfusion even in case of suspected dengue although platelet counts are high. In general, treatment cost is increasing for families.

1,027 dengue fever cases have been registered in the district so far. There have been three confirmed dengue fever death cases and nine deaths due to suspected dengue fever. As of now, 35 patients suffering from suspected dengue are being treated in different hospitals, and health department officals say that their health condition is steady.

The doctors attribute increasing number of viral fever, bacterial fever, stomachache and dysentery cases to after-affects of rain having stopped. District health surveillance officer, Dr Naveenchandra, said that there is no need to admit all patients having symptoms of suspected dengue fever to get admitted. He said that action will be taken against hospitals insisting on admitting patients even if their platelet count is high.

Some hospitals are facing shortage of beds. In the meanwhile, Udupi district has witnessed increase of dengue cases. District health officer, Dr Ashok, said that so far 197 suspected dengue cases and 72 malaria cases have been reported from the district.
