Udupi: Sand mining to begin in district with immediate effect - MLA Bhat

Udupi, Sep 17: “Sand mining in the district will begin with immediate effect,” said Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat on Tuesday, September 17. 

He informed that a meeting of 7- member committee was held with the participation of district commissioner and MLA on Tuesday and it was decided there that the sand bars will be identified, from Wednesday and officials will start the leasing process to 158 licensed persons. 

The sand mining will start in CRZ areas, he clarified. 

MLA Bhat has confirmed that within some days, the public will get the sand for the construction purposes. 

Sand mining was banned in Udupi district for last two years.

    Hmmm... Are politicians less educated, or probably they don't care.. cutting down trees and building malls, work in progress flyover since 10 years, there is no new tree planted anywhere as substitute, that Adani alone is enough to destroy Udupi and Mangalore soon people will suffer of bronchitis and asthama, area near panambur is already devastating, now sand mining... ecosystem is already destroyed..

    till yesterday you are all criticized the govt./MLA about non-availability of sand. you people also said that, your own govt is there why cant you take action. but when it happened you are all talking against the action. this is really tragedy.

    This is rediculous govt contractors must start other methods of building construction. Removal of sand is not good for the environment. Sand is necessary for water to remain. Otherwise there will be again scarcity of water rivers go dry. What this that is doing is all for money just like another DKShee. All should join together and revolt to this. Not good news at all

    Soodha ji, if we remove sand rivers go dry as you stated.

    If we try to manufacture substitute for the sand, for sure we need to set up some factories. We pick of our placard in the name of air/ water pollution.

    I had planned to have One Bed Room house in my home town in Sastan. For the last One year waiting for the Sand and my house is close to the River ( half KM ). I don't want to use M sand as after some time wall gets air crack. What I should do ?? please clarify

    After illegal iron ore mining in by Reddy brothers to the tune of Rs35,000 crores, another Bellary is going to recreate this time in the undivided Canara looting mother nature.

    India is hungry for sand. Fueled by a real estate boom estimated to generate $180 billion annually by 2020, India is digging 500 million metric tons of sand every year, feeding an industry worth more than $50 billion. And India's hunger is bound to increase, as the government plans to build about 60 million new affordable homes between 2018 and 2024.

    Environmental impact assessments have failed to shine a light on the real impact of mining. Consequences include groundwater depletion, loss of agricultural land and farm employment, loss of water resources, and road and bridge damage, according to the state's Campaign for the Protection of Water Resources.

    Losing farmland undermines food security. Sand beach mining exacerbates seawater intrusion, which compromises land productivity and freshwater supplies, displacing people who no longer have access to basic resources.

    Sand extraction can also leave people at the mercy of extreme weather events such as storm surges and tsunamis by stripping away their buffer against sea level rises, according to the paper in Science.

    In Tamil Nadu alone illegal sand mining may be a scam worth Rs1 lakh crore, likewise, a whopping 98.87 lakh metric tonnes of minerals were illegally excavated in a period of five years in five Rajasthan districts.
    Due to the sand mining, there is more of effect on the ecosystem which will have a severe impact on plants, animals, and rivers. In February 2012, the supreme court of India ruled that approval under the 2006 environment impact assessment notification is needed for all the sand miners collection activity, even if the area being is less than 5 hectares. The main few features of illegal sand mining are, sand was being dredged illegally and operations were taking place during the monsoon mechanical dredger.
