Udupi, Sep 17: The district child protection unit here, working in association with Nagarika Seva Samiti and Lions Club Brahmagiri, in a joint operation, helped four labourers from Gadag who were unemployed, and their seven migrant children, who were living in tents beside the national highway here since some months, to go back to their native places on Monday, September 16.
Seven migrant labourers and 12 children had been living in four tents beside the national highway near Karavali Circle here. District child protection unit, in an initiative undertaken on September 12, had asked these labourers to relocate to another place within the next three days as their stay near the highway was fraught with risks besides being unhygienic. As they failed to shift their residences within the stipulated time, the government department officials accompanied by Nagarika Seva Samiti office bearers, visited the tents on Monday.
Four adult labourers living with their seven children expressed their inability to return to their hometowns for want of money though they said they were willing to return. Therefore, Lions Club Brahmagiri arranged to meet their bus fare and sent them home. The remaining eight people have removed their tents and begun to stay at a place that is away from the highway.
District child protection unit officer, Dayanand, legal inspector of district child protection unit, Prabhaker Achar, social worker, Yogish, Nagarika Seva Samiti general secretary, Nithyananda Olakadu and Taranath Mestha, Brahmagiri Lions club members Umesh Nayak, Vadiraj and Vasudev took part in the operation.
