Bantwal, Sep 15: Several years old, controversial den of illegal activities, illegally constructed ‘Sunnada Goodu’ (nest of limestone) structure here was demolished on orders from Mangaluru assistant commissioner Ravichandra Naik, Bantwal tahsildar Rashmi S R in tight police security in the leadership of Bantwal ASP Saidul Adavat including Bantwal circle inspector T D Nagaraj, Bantwal town station SI Chandrashekar, rural SI Prasanna and SI Sudhaker Thonse on Saturday, September 14.
Sunnada Goodu had come up several years ago for manufacturing lime. The municipality banned manufacturing of lime later as the smoke had blinded vehicle drivers and caused accidents. The council stopped collection of tax in 2007 and Mescom stopped power supply. Migrant labourers from Andhra, Dharwad and Hubballi started staying there. Though the building had no owners, P M Ibrahim, N Ahmed, Abdul Khader, P M Ahmed and P M Iqbal were collecting rent from labourers. The structure had neither toilets nor other basic necessities. Therefore, the labourers were using Netravati river for their needs. The residents here have been complaining to the municipal council fearing epidemic but the officials were indifferent. There were allegations of illegal activities in the structure which used to be inundated with rain water in monsoons. The tahsildar faced several obstacles in his efforts for its demolition.
The master plan of three female officials has worked in its demolition. They are Taluk officer Rashmi, chief municipal council officer Rekha Shetty and Panemangalore village accountant Vijetha. Village accountant Yashodha, T D Rajesh Nayak, revenue inspector Naveen and revenue department also has worked behind them.
