Puttur, Jul 11: State Tulu Sahitya Academy president Dr Paltady Ramakrishna Achar lamented the fact that Tulu has not yet been accorded the status of an official language of the state. He was speaking after presiding over the inaugural of the 'Bale Tulu Kalpuga' Tulu classes being held under the aegis of the Academy, aimed at teaching Tulu to Non-Tuluvas, here on the evening of Friday July 10.
The programme was held at Dr Shivaram Karant Highschool. "The government has promised to take steps to accept Tulu as an official language. The Academy has taken up various programmes for the spreading of Tulu language. The Academy has plans to open Tulu Sanghs in all the schools and colleges," he explained.
Puttur sub-divisional officer Dr Harish Kumar, who inaugurated the classes, stressed that efforts should me to ensure that the children of the Tuluvas do not forget Tulu, as teaching the language to others alone can not serve the purpose. He expressed his displeasure at the practice of conversing in English that is followed by many families here, as the people here have developed inferiority complex about their mother tongue.
Municipal president Rajesh Bannur, Puttur Tulu Koota president Durgaprasad Rai Kumbra, block education officer Y Shivaramaiah and Shivaram Karant Highschool head master Gururaj K P participated as guests. Various other dignitaries including writer I K Bolwar, artistes K H Dasappa Rai and Mandara Sundar Rai, Indus College principal Seetaram Kevala etc., were present.
