Bengaluru: CM promises to constitute panel to discuss 7.5% ST quota for Valmikis

Bengaluru, Sept 9: In a bid to woo the Scheduled Tribes community of Valmikis, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has promised to constitute a high-level committee to study the demand for increasing the ST reservation quota for the community to 7.5%.

A delegation of the Valmiki community led by the pontiff of the Valmiki gurupeeth Sri Valmiki Prasannananda Swamy of Rajanahalli in Davangere district, which called on the Chief Minister at his home office Krishna in Bengaluru on Monday, presented a charter of demands pertaining to the community, including increasing reservation quota.

Yediyurappa promised to take up the report of the committee on the issue and discuss in the State Cabinet before taking final decision.

The delegation apprised the Chief Minister that the Valmiki community population was around 7 lakh in the State and the reservation quota needed to be enhanced in accordance with its population.

Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol and Health and Family Welfare Minister B Sriramulu, who belongs to the Valmiki community, were present along with MLA Rajugowda.
