Mangaluru, Aug 22: A huge boulder slid from the hillock due to the landslide at Majaluthota under Munnor gram panchayat limits of Ullal near here. The compound wall of a house is completely damaged due to the incident and it has cut the road connection for more than 250 houses, which can be accessed only through the road that connects Somanatha Uliya to Ranipura Uliya.
The boulder rolled on to the compound wall of the house of Narayan at around 2.30 am on Thursday, August 22. As the boulder that rolled on to the road is huge, it will take some days for it to be cleared. This boulder was tried to be removed 20 years ago during the course of the construction of the road, but was left as its size was quite huge to be cleared. As the boulder was left on the edge of the hillock, it was inviting danger since that time.
Residents of nearby areas used to get scared while passing below this huge boulder. Fortunately more danger is averted as the boulder slid from the hillock in the night. In addition, according to locals, it is really miracle that the boulder did not roll on to the house but stopped after hitting the compound wall.
According to experts, it may take three days for the boulder to be cleared from the road. As the size of the boulder is quite huge, it needs to be broken into smaller pieces using a compressor. The amount of mud also is more. The villagers of this area had highlighted the danger of the boulder long ago. However, the same could be blasted as the place very next to it is inhabited by people according to Harish Bhandarabailu, vice-president of local gram panchayat.
Roopa Shetty, president of Munnur gram panchayat, vice-president Harish Bhandarabailu, Dhanalaxmi Gatty, zilla panchayat member, Wilma Wilfred D'Souza, taluk panchayat member, Naveen D'Souza member, village accountant Nayana, development officer Ravindra Nayak and Panchayat Raj enginerr Nitin Kumar visited the spot.
