Mumbai, Jun 24: A contemplation programme on classical status for Kannada was held here on Sunday June 21, at the Mysore Association auditorium.  It was jointly organized by Kannada Development Authority (KDA) Bangalore and the metro- based Mysore Association. 
 
KDA president Mukhyamantri Chandru inaugurated the day-long programme on Sunday morning, by lighting the lamp.
 

Speaking on the occasion, Chandru said that KDA stands committed for the growth of Kannada not only in Karnataka but also all over the country.  If Kannada has the pre-requisites for getting the classical status, it has to be given that status without bias, he said.
 
Meanwhile, Chandru urged the Kannadigas’ both in Karnataka and those settled in the metro here, to support the movement for getting classical status for Kannada.
 
Karnataka Sahitya Academy president Prof M H Krishnaiah, in his key note address, said that languages take birth and get shaped on the basis of the necessity in the society.  The linguistic scientists, can not discriminate between different languages.  About 6,900 languages exist in the world, most of which have no scripts.  UNESCO has granted classical status to seven languages.  The classical status granted to to Halegannada is based on its research and study, exempting the latest Kannada.  Karnataka MPs are urged to take up the issue of awarding classical status to Kannada in the Lok Sabha, else it will be a difficult task, he opined.
 
K Shyamaradha sang the welcome hymn.  Vijaykumar Jitori read the verses from the Geetha.  Mysore Association president K Ramachandra welcomed the gathering.  Narayan Navilekar compered the programme.
