Panaji, Aug 17: Goa’s capital city of Panaji was amongst the areas that went without tapped water supply for second consecutive day on Saturday even as chief minister Pramod Sawant assured that the supply would be restored by coming Monday.

Sawant said on Saturday that the work on restoring the pipeline that had busted snapping the water supply from Opa Water Supply plant to the talukas of Tiswadi and Ponda would be finished by Monday.

The pipeline cracked on August 15 due to a landslide near Ponda town, 40 kms away from here after the state witnessed heavy rains.

Several water tankers have been commissioned by the state government to provide water to the scarcity hit areas including Panaji, the chief minister told reporters on Saturday, at a sidelines of a government function.

“The water supply would be restored by Monday and till then the state government will supply free water to the people through the tankers,” he said.

State Public Works Department minister Dipak Pauskar said that the work on restoration of the pipeline has been going on round the clock, without taking any break.

“I am personally monitoring the restoration work to ensure that it is completed in time,” he said.

Panaji city was one amongst the worst affected parts of Goa due to water shortage. People were seen moving out of the city on weekend to avoid water crisis.
