Mangaluru, Aug 17: The nation’s 73rd Independence Day was celebrated at Kottara Cross, Kapikad, Derebail, on August 15 jointly by the members of the Swamy Aiyappa Bhakta Samithi and Kapikad ward, Derebail Church under the name of Kottara Cross Mitra Vrunda.
Guruswamy Tukarama Devadiga welcomed the gathering which consisted of all locals based on the invitation of Kottara Cross Mitra Vrunda. Guruswamy Tukaram Devadiga, Edward Coelho, gurkar and Boniface Rego, member of the Kottara Cross Mitra Vrunda were the guests on the dais.
The august gathering started singing Vande Matharam. After the song, Guruswamy requested the Edward Coelho J, the new gurkar of Kapikad ward, Derebail Church to hoist the tricolour. Edward Coelho J, hoisted the national flag and the mass honour the unfurled Flag by saluting and singing the national anthem.
After that, games and quiz covered subjects like nation, freedom fighters, Constitution, flag, wheel, etc conducted by Winnie Rodrigues and Jessica Crasto. In the meanwhile, Terry Pais, president of Diocesan Woman Association, Mangaluru, addressed the audience on the occasion, the rights and protection of a woman in the society as well in the nation.
After the prize Distribution to winners by the guests on dais, the chief guest addressed the august gathering and said, “The Swatch Abhiyan movement is very important and we have to play a vital role to support this movement. We can live happily in our locality and society by keeping our environment clean as well. More so, in our lifestyle, our behaviour, dressing, talk and deeds and help the needy.”
Winnie Rodrigues rendered the vote of thanks. Sylvester D’Cunha compered the programme. High Tea was served to the audience.
