Mangaluru: Kalakul to present fest of three plays

Mangaluru, Aug 14: Kalakul - the only Konkani theatre repertory will present Kalakulotsav-2019, a fest of three plays on Saturday August 17 at 6 pm.

The play ‘Antigone’ directed by Viddu Uchil, is organised by St Aloysius College Konkani Natak Sangh, at the LCRI hall.

On Sunday August 25, ‘Paying Guest’ directed by Arunraj Rodrigues will be presented at 6.30 pm at the parish hall of St Joseph the Worker Church, Vamanjoor.

On September 1, convocation ceremony of the eighth batch of Kalakul will be held at the closing ceremony of the 213th monthly theatre. A new play titled 'Hanv Konnachim?' will be presented that day. All the three plays have been written by Arunraj Rodrigues.

Entry is free for all the plays.

Mandd Sobhann commenced Kalakul in 2011 with the intention of giving a modern touch to Konkani plays and contemporising it. NRI businessman and philanthropist Michael D'Souza, Dubai supported Kalakul by being its main sponsor for the year 2019.

The students learn acting, writing plays, stage setting, make up, sound and light management, mime and other aspects of theatre. They have to present four plays and a few street plays. The students are paid a monthly stipend and are also paid for every show presented.

A convocation ceremony is held at the end of the term.

In the past eight years, 290 shows of experimental and other forms of 32 plays have been presented in India and abroad. Kalakul has also presented a Kannada play and has also participated in state level and national level theatre festivals.
