Udupi, Jun 19: The district Women’s Congress Committee has alleged that Udupi town police station in-charge M G Nayak behaved indecently and exhibited arrogance while dealing with the activists of the district Women’s Congress Committee who were holding a protest in front of the local head post office, recently.
A delegation led by the Committee president Veronica Cornelio and former state minister Vasant V Salian submitted a petition to the district superintendent of police Pravin Madhukar Pawar here on Thursday June 18, demanding immediate action against the erring police officer. They said that the Congress Party activists were holding a post-card campaign, demanding for the handing over of the case pertaining to the disappearance and death of Padmapriya, wife of local MLA K Rahupati Bhat, to Central Bureau of Investigation. “Town station house officer M G Nayak arrived on the spot along with other personnel, behaved in a frenzied and arrogant manner. He also threatened the activists and behaved like a goonda,” they said.
At the same time, victory procession of a taluk panchayat member was in progress in the city as a result of which, the entire road was blocked. The police officer in question did not take any action against them, but chose to push around the Congress Party protestors, saying that they were disturbing traffic, they complained and questioned the propriety of Nayak’s action.
The delegation comprised of district Congress Committee president M A Gafoor, Diwakar Kunder, K P Padmavati, Habib Ali, Keerti Shetty and several others.
