Panaji, Jun 17: The Panaji city is expected to get rid of the garbage crisis in next couple of days even as local civic body is still grappling to work out solution for the impending crisis.

“We have started lifting the garbage and situation would be normalized in next two to three days,” Corporation of city of Panaji Mayor Caroline Po told reporters at her chamber here.

Goa’s capital city of Panaji is reeling under one of the worst ever garbage crisis after the CCP lost its treatment site to the protests by locals. The Mayor had asked its garbage units not to clear the waste in absence of proper dumping and treatment site escalating the crisis.

As the city witnessed first monsoon showers, the filth ruled the capital prompting the Urban Development Ministry to call for the meeting with the CCP officials.

Goa’s leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar, Education minister Atanasio Monserratte and other officials were present for the crucial meeting which was chaired by Urban development minister Joaquim Alemao this afternoon.

The Mayor, emerging from the meeting, said that the corporation would increase the number of composting units in the city to treat the garbage. “The city has around 105 units and we will add 10 more,” she said.

She said that the composting units will manage most of the city waste while CCP finalises the permanent site to treat the garbage.

Urban development minister said that his ministry has already allotted a site to treat garbage for the CCP. “We are providing all the required help to them. The corporation needs to take the steps to ensure that the site is utilized,” he said.
