Beltangady: Youth trying to extract sand during floods drowns

Beltangady, Aug 9: A youth who ventured into River Kapila at Sudegundi near Kokkada in the taluk drowned after strong floodwater washed him away. This incident happened on the evening of Thursday, August 8. 

The deceased has been identified as Bhavith (23), son of Vishwanath from Kokkada village.

When the river was overflowing, a gang comprising local people, overlooking the threat posed by floods, came near the river, parked their pick-up vehicle on the riverbank, and got engaged in extracting sand by going down the water to collect sand.

It is said that a number of such groups are engaged in illegal sand extraction, braving the floods which endanger their lives. 

The member, Bhavith, of one such gang lost his life due to his adventurism.
