Kundapur: Caller impersonating as bank official dupes gullible customer

Kundapur, Aug 8: A bank customer identified as Krishna Naik (26) from Hengavalli in the taluk has filed a police complaint, stating that he has been divested of one lac rupees by a fraudster who posed as bank officer.

Naik said that he received a call for a stranger on August 2. The caller introduced himself as a Canara Bank officer. "He informed me that my ATM card has been countermanded. If it needs to be re-activated, he said he needs all details of my ATM card. I trusted the caller and gave him my ATM card number, CVV number and the OTP number received on my cellphone," he confessed.

The accused collected OTP number from Krishna Naik on a total of 12 occasions and siphoned off Rs 1,00,673.15 from the account he maintained with Canara Bank, Belve branch here, it is said. The amounts were debited by way of online transactions.

On the basis of a complaint made by Krishna Naik, personnel of cyber crime, economic offences and narcotics police station at Udupi have registered a case.
