Brahmavar, Aug 5: “Many changes have happened in the field of journalism, which is the fourth estate of democracy. However, journalism and media are responsible for the democracy to survive in this country,” said senior politician B L Shankar.
Shankar was speaking at the ‘Patrikodyama Madhyama Samvada’ programme that was held at the Buntara Bhavana in the town on Sunday, August 4 that was organized by Brahmavar taluk journalists’ association.
Shankar further said, “Democracy, which is rich in culture, is strong in our country. We are not able to see this kind of democracy in any other country of this world. There were 3,300 newspapers before independence and now more than 60,000 newspapers are being published in more than 100 langauges. This shows the greatness of our country. Journalism, which was a service earlier, has developed into an industry now, which is inevitable.”
Former minister Jayaprakash Hegde, who presided over the function, said, “The fact has changed in today’s media. Instead of concentrating on broadcasting opinions, if only truth is published, the media will survive.”
“The idea of strengthening the power of people should be done through media. There is a need for the media to fight against injustice and take the side of truth,” said Chandrashekhar Palethady, editor of Karanataka Malla newspaper of Mumbai.
Chandrashekhar Palethday was speaking after receiving the Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Journalism award that was conferred on him at the Buntara Bhavana of the taluk on Sunday, August 4. He recalled his association with Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty, who was the editor of Mungaru newspaper and said that his thought and ideals are very relevant for the present day also.
MLA Raghupati Bhat, who inaugurated the programme said that the media should do the work of building the society.
