Panaji, Aug 1: Congress party on Thursday suspended wife of deputy chief minister Chandrakant Kavlekar from a prominent post in the party accusing her of being involved in anti-party activities.
Then leader of Opposition, Kavlekar, had led a group of ten Congress MLAs who had split from the party to join BJP. Kavlekar’s wife, Savitri, is a secretary of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC).
GPCC president Girish Chodankar on Thursday announced that Savitri has been suspended as secretary of the committee pending inquiry against her for indulging in anti-party activities.
Savitri has unsuccessfully contested state legislative assembly election from Sanguem constituency on Congress ticket while her husband won in Quepem legislative assembly segment.
Kavlekar headed a group of ten MLAs who switched over to BJP last month, after which he was inducted in Pramod Sawant-led government and designated as deputy chief minister.
The deputy chief minister, responding to a question during media interaction, had claimed that his wife joined BJP. Savitri had not made her stand clear. She was not available for comments on Thursday after order of her suspension was issued.
