Bengaluru, Jul 27: While the newly sworn in Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa is getting ready for a motion of confidence in the assembly on July 29, Congress leaders claim that they are being contacted by rebel MLAs.
Former home minister MB Patil told reporters on Saturday, July 27, that two MLAs from rebel camp called up Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Siddaramaiah. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah also confirmed Patil's statements and said that the rebel MLAs were afraid that they will be disqualified. "It could be a reason they called, but I did not answer their calls," he said.
Sources say that the disqualification of three rebel MLAs - Ramesh Jarkiholi, Mahesh Kumathalli and R Shankar - under the anti-defection law, has spread fear among the rebel MLAs.
Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar who ordered disqualification said the three MLAs are barred for the entire tenure of the incumbent 15th Legislative Assembly till May 2023. This means they cannot contest the ensuing bye-elections.
The Congress-JD(S) coalition hopes that the disqualification will become a lesson for the rebel MLAs. They are hoping that in fear of jeopardizing their political future, the rebel MLAs return.
Meanwhile, JD(S) rebel legislator H Vishwanath said the claims by the Congress leaders were a tactic to create confusion. "We're intelligent enough. They are trying to mislead us, but we will not go astray. They are the ones who are misled,” Vishwanath told a news channel.
He also rubbished claims that the rebel MLAs were afraid of disqualification.
The Yediyurappa-led BJP currently has a strength of 106 members, including an Independent legislator. To win the floor test, BJP has to make sure that the Congress-JD(S) strength is restricted to 100 and make sure the rebels abstain.
When Siddaramaiah was asked, if the rebel MLAs will come for the floor test on Monday, he said he does not know who will come and who will abstain. He expressed his doubts on the rebels being kept captive. "By luring them or by holding them captive, it is not victory of people but victory of horse trading," he told reporters on Saturday.
