Udupi, Jul 27: Renowned banker Karkada Manjunatha Udupa, better known as K M Udupa, passed away on Saturday, July 27. He was 80.
He is survived by wife Shantha, three sons and a daughter.
Udupa’s last rites of will be carried out on July 28 at his village Mandarthi at 11.30 am.
Udupa had made significant contribution in promoting and formulating the country’s agriculture credit policy and introducing innovations in efficient farm management techniques.

Udupa had completed BSc, (Agriculture) from Mysore University with post graduate diploma in Rice Breeding at Central Rice Institute Cuttack.
From 1959 to 1965, he worked as Research Officer (Paddy) in the Karnataka government. From 1965 to 1967, he served as a farm manager for Superior Seeds Farm. He was instrumental in introducing high yielding variety of rice. From 1967 to 1989, he served in the Agricultural Finance and Rural Development Department of Syndicate Bank. First 10 years as technical officer and the next 10 years as head of the Department. He was instrumental in introducing innovate Rural Credit Schemes. He worked as zonal manager in Karwar Zone of Syndicate Bank, served as chairman of Malaprabha Grameena Bank and deputy general manager of Syndicate Bank, Hyderabad Zone. He had conceived and implemented integrated rural development projects like Farm clinic, efficient management techniques for small farms, integrated area development, Go-bar Gas scheme for credit area, integrated rural development branches. He was the vice president of Syndicate Agricultural and Rural Development Foundation, for over 20 years.
Udupa had undergone various technical and management trainings in India and Abroad in institutions such as IIM., National Institute of Bank Management, National Bank of Australia, National Institute of rural development, Trustee of SKDRDP, Dharmasthala, Member of Board of Governor, RUDSET Institute etc.
He had also participated in workshop and seminars, has participated in several national and international workshops, in India and Abroad. Vis USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Manila, Singapore etc.,
Udupa was member of several expert committees on Rural Banking at the National Level Expert Committees on Rural Banking. He had also visited Paris to study working of the ‘Credit Agricole’ as a member of high power team.
Udupa was instrumental in formulating a scheme me of financing solar lighting system by Commercial banks in India. He attended a seminar at Pocantico Centre, New York in 1995 and presented a paper on financing solar systems by banks.
After retirement, he was working as honorary secretary of several important trusts in the country. He was also the director of SELCO and advisor to Manipal Group of Companies. Besides, he was a guest faculty in many national institutes.
He also served as the manager of Sri Durga Parameshwari Higher Primary School, Mandarthi.
He was the close associate of late T A Pai. He was an managing trustee of Bharathiya Vikas Trust (BVT) till May 2003, which has been founded by late T A Pai.
Since May 2003 he was working as managing trustee of BVT which is one of the reputed trusts in the country.
He was also contributing his might to ICDS as a director.
