Mangaluru, Jul 25: In connection with a one-year-old case relating to illegal ganja trafficking, the district chief and sessions court here handed down five years rigorous imprisonment and one lac rupees fine each to two accused.
Through a judgement delivered on Wednesday July 24, the court imposed the above punishment on Muhammed Tausiq (22) from Kajur in Beltangady taluk and Abdul Cinan (24) from Malvantige village.
Both Tausiq and Cinan had been arrested by Beltangady police circle inspector, Girish Kumar, and staff at Ujire when they were transporting ganja from the direction of Charmadi towards Beltangady by car on April 13, 2018. 5.25 kg ganja worth one lac rupees, a car, Rs 1,500 in cash and two cellphones were seized from the arrested accused.
Judge of the district chief and sessions court, Kadlur Satyanarayanacharya, pronounced the accused guilty through the said judgement, on Tuesday. Quantum of sentence was announced on Wednesday. The two will have to undergo six additional months of imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine. The court has permitted to deduct the period already spent by the accused in judicial custody from the period of sentences now announced. It also said that the car, cellphone and cash would be impounded by the government.
Public prosecutors Pushparaj Adyantaya and Raju Poojary, represented the prosecution.
