Mangaluru, Jul 24: Dengue fever has already claimed four lives in the district, which has pushed the family members of the deceased under distress. For the last couple of months, dengue is reported from parts of Mangaluru, Sullia and Kadaba.

Veena Nayak (45) from Kadaba, Shraddha Shetty (13), a resident of Gujjarakere, Krish (8), a resident of Lalbagh, and Nagesh Padu (34) from Padu are the people who have been the victims of the deadly dengue. While the death of Krish is not officially declared as that occurred due to dengue, others’ deaths are confirmed by the district health authority.

Talented Shraddha Shetty

Shraddha Shetty (13) was a resident of Gujjarakere and daughter of couple Kishore and Sharada. She was second among the two children. She was pursuing seventh standard in a private school. Shraddha was a topper in studies and was getting trained in singing. She had bagged several awards. Recently Shraddha's bhajan song had gone viral on social media. Unfortunately dengue has claimed the life of this young and talented girl.

Veena Nayak, bread winner of the family

In Kadaba, dengue has claimed the life of 45-year-old Veena Nayak, who was the bread winner of the family. Veena was working in a milk diary. Veena's husband had bought an auto rickshaw recently and had started earning. Veena was also running a business of manufacturing use and throw plates to help her husband to manage the day to day expenses.

Veena has two children. Her son is pursuing his SSLC, while the girl child is differently-abled from birth. The responsibility of the whole family was on the shoulders of Veena. Now her death has pushed the family into dire straits.

Passionate Journalist Nagesh Padu

It was shocker for the press fraternity, when dengue claimed a passionate video journalist, Nagesh Padu at the age of 34. Nagesh Padu was loved by all. He was always at the forefront in helping others and was passionate about his work. Nagesh Padu had dreamt of owning a new house and a two wheeler. But before he could realize his dreams, Nagesh Padu lost his life at a very young age, which is a huge loss for the field of journalism.

Chess master Krish

As per government documents, dengue has claimed three lives so far, while the reason for the fourth death is under review stage and the report is yet to come. Krish was the son of Naveen and Anitha couple, residents of Lalbagh. Krish’s father is employed in Bahrain, while mother is working at a private hospital.

Krish was pursing third standard in a private school. He was always inclined towards studies as well as sports. As per Krish’s interest, with the support of his parents, he was getting trained in chess and Krish was also actively taking part in dance and other activities in the school.

District administration taking preventive measures

The district administration of Dakshina Kannada is taking all kinds of precautionary measures under the guidance of deputy commissioner (DC) Sasikanth Senthil to prevent the spreading of dengue. They are also conducting special drives to houses, apartments, construction sites, and shops to check and impose fines of Rs 5,000, if they find any source for breeding of dengue mosquitoes.

Schools, colleges, NGO's have joined hands with the district administration for cleanliness. So far over Rs two lac fine is collected from the shops and buildings whose surrounding area gives scope for the mosquitoes to breed.

May the departed souls rest in peace. We hope situation gets better.
It is very easy to blame Dist Administration, Govt etc. Firstly let us learn to keep our home surroundings clean and neat. Water logging near homes, at building construction sites need to be taken care of. Dist Admin should take stringent action against Builders who are major reason for half / unfinished structure which are a major home for Mosquito breeding.
State Govt will not do anything until their seats are secured and their future is certain. They are busy fighting within. So we are left to fight for ourselves for our survival.

Prevention is better than cure.Dengue should be suspected when you have sudden onset of fever.Beware of the day mosquito bite.Cover your body with long dress and socks.Sleep under mosquito net .Construction sites with stagnant pools of water is the main reason. The supervisor of the Antony waste cleaning Praveen expired few days back with dengue fever.
