Panaji, Jul 20: Water started to overflow from the crest of Selaulim dam since Wednesday night. Officials from the water resources department, overseeing the dam situation confirmed the development and said the dam started overflowing at 10.45 pm.

Officials said the phenomenon is likely to last until November, depending on the intensity of rainfall in the areas constituting the catchment area of the dam.

The Full Reservoir Level (FRL) is 41.15m and the overflowing water flows into the Selaulim river which is used for irrigation purposes. As per officials, the unique duckbill spillway of the dam is designed to pass a maximum flood discharge of 1,450 cum per second. Of the total live storage of about 227 cu m, 126 cu m is used for irrigation and the balance 101 cu m is earmarked for domestic and industrial use.

Tourists, as well as locals, are expected to flock to the dam in large numbers during the monsoon weekends with the overflowing water offering a spectacular sight of the dam and its surroundings.
