Udupi, May 24: An exhibition of coins and stamps titled “Numishilpa-09” was inaugurated here on Saturday.
Coins belonging to the periods of Shatavahana, Kushana, Chola, Mughal, Tipu Sultan, Vijayanagara rule, East India Company, Portuguese rule in India, and those issued during the British rule in India.
Stamps of different countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and India on different topics were on display.
Perforated postage stamps from Great Britain and various cancellation covers issued during special occasions in India were also exhibited.
Assistant Superintendent of Udupi Postal Division Nagabhushan N., who inaugurated the stamps exhibition, said that the Department of Posts was encouraging students to collect stamps. It had held programmes in Kundapur in this regard.
Both stamps and coins had a lot of educative value and students could learn a lot from them, he said.
Director of Numis-Phila, Udupi, K.V. Shanbhag welcomed the gathering. Philatelist and Numismatist M. Mukunda Prabhu inaugurated the coins exhibition.
President of Udupi Philatelic Association K.L. Bhat proposed a vote of thanks. President of Canara Numismatic Society H.P. Nayak and Managing Trustee of Sri Lakshmi Venkatesh Temple U.D. Kamath were present.
The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Sri Bhuvanendra Mantapa on Sri Lakshmi Venkatesh Temple premises here till May 25.
