Mangaluru: Air India Express flight from Dubai skids on runway, passengers safe

Mangaluru, Jun 30: Air India Express that arrived from Dubai at 5.40 pm on Sunday, June 30 here, skidded after landing, as per reliable sources.

The incident happened after the aircraft landed at Mangaluru International Airport and proceeded on the runway.

All the passengers in the aircraft are safe. Reportedly the aircraft was carrying 183 passengers and 6 crew.

The aircraft was brought to the safer position after the skidding took place.

Pilots

All flight movements have been banned until further notice at airport.

Spicejet flight from Dubai was diverted to Bengaluru.

As are initial reports the aircraft had overshot the runway while landing. Pilot’s presence of mind saved the aircraft, said some sources.

Some airport sources said that the incident happened due to tailwind and wet runway with inadequate braking action. All passengers were deplaned using step ladder.

The official statement from airport director says, “AXB384, B737-800, B737-800 Registration VTAYA, carried out missed approach at 1732 IST and thereafter in second attempt landed at Mangalore on RWY24 at 1742 . The aircraft while turning on taxiway entered katcha portion of strip apparently due to high speed as per observation of ATC. All passengers were safe and de-boarded. There appears to be no damage to the aircraft and Air India Express engineers are trying to tow the aircraft to apron for further inspection. The aircraft location in the strip is being assessed for clearance from ILS & Runway strip for resuming operations. The delayed departures are now being cleared with approval of DGCA."

Yes this is God's grace all passengers are safe also i highly appreciate to pilots their excellent work thanks to their great efforts well done. I think the runway is slippery because of water not draining properly also may be the tyers are worn out and there is NO strong grips also possibility that flab of the changing direction turned to the opposite side while landing this is may be this is the possibility that due to the strong wind. anyway many many thanks to god he has protected to all.

See this is a serious incidence which took place ,pilots do their best in landing and take off ,even all lives are sacred in that plane ,even if a doctor is operating he does his level best to save his patient .so u cannot blame anyone for this incidence .the authorities have to see a good runway and takeoff places are contructed with a good planned engineer ,people are paying airport taxes for what to be safe when they come to visit another country .I think people must think and post their comments .

I feel the captain tried to take the u-turn, but couldn’t complete it due to high speed & aircraft went in different direction away from the taxiway. Yes there are marks on the ground before the ditch, but it’s not so deep unlike after the ditch. May be the pilot had reduced the speed considerably before the ditch & resistance of climb after the ditch reduced it further.

Fortunately nothing happened...

Now question of aircraft... the front side definitely had some shock due to jumping that small canal... so check up that portion... it may breakdown in future....

I suggest no load take off and landing for this aircraft once....

Okay.As per ATC observation accident happened due to bad weather and high speed while turning on taxi way. Pilot should have reduced the speed bcoz runway was wet. My request to all the concerned authorities, to give permission for a second Airport in Padubidri.

Just an hour before this we landed from muscat. We had a freaky turbulence for almost 7 minutes on descent . Passengers were screaming. We panicked . I started praying.
But our captain michael saldhana did a superb landing and got us all safe . He even apologised on the PA for the unavoidable weather condition.

Yes indeed a full full flight . All coming down for vacations break.

All Runways should be cleared and certified, "Free of Algae" on a daily basis, and runways should have adequate drainage systems that prevents clogging, during rainy season.

On the other hand, air crafts landing and taking off in rainy seasons, should have landing gear and tyres certified for full grip as well.

Mangalore airport, on one hand is expanding, while the basic requirements cannot be met due to table top type etc., and surely a big lobby will not allow relocating the same to technically sound location.

Those who are saying table top runway is dangerous, then u must visit nepal airports,most of them have most dangerous tabletop.

The thing is here its poor management.Air signal lights are very few ,weak co ordination.

In last two occasions I have noticed passengers are coming out from their seats and start pulling cabin luggage’s while flight still moving in run way.. If you guys see the mark on the ground from the front landing gear of the aircraft, it can be clearly noticed that the front landing gear touched down after the ditch. This is an indication that the aircraft was not in the taxiway & fully landed after the ditch.

I don’t think aircraft skid in the taxiway.
The speed in taxiway is much well below the speed in runway.
I feel the pilot overshot the runway due to bad weather & took turn towards the taxiway to prevent aircraft from reaching end of the runway.
The pilot did a good job to take the aircraft away from end of runway so that it stops in wet mud.

Glad that major event averted. I had mentioned earlier that the airport should be shifted to possibly near Niddodi or nearby where I think there is enough government land to build a new airport with runway directly pointing between west and east direction. Actually, the old runway has the right direction and efforts should have been made to extend that runway by another 5000 feet by using modern engineering techniques. Otherwise, better to build a new airport not too far because, Mangalure airport needs to cater the needs of DK, north Kerala as well. Since there is a plan to build new bypass road, it will provide better connectivity to the new airport both for south Mangaluru and Udupi district.

Landing during monsoon is not only tricky but also scary. Last Wednesday, I was on Indigo flight that aborted landing few meters from the runway due to clouds and poor visibility. He landed safely in the second attempt. I also heard that the smaller aircrafts of Spicejet also had difficulty landing. Hope all adequate safety measures are taken in the interest of flyers and not let the tough competition take over the cool heads to a level where safety is compromised.

Yes, it is because of the direction of the main (new) runway which is not exactly aligned to the wind direction that is coming from west coast/sea. The old runway was aligned correctly, but it required major work of filling the slopes to extend the runway on the east side and so, more than likely it was decided to build a new runway along the hill top which I think is making landing difficult during windy and rainy conditions especially for a fully loaded aircraft. It requires experienced pilots I suppose.

Skidding on taxiway is not very rare....but Pilot need to be investigated about his performance...

Thank God ....all passengers are safe and aircraft was not damaged...There is a valley at the end of Mangalore airport runway ...which is not an ideal situation...that's why we lost an aircraft last time...even though it was 100% Pilot error....this could be very well a Pilot error...

@Langoo,Belman/washington ,langoo,dont blame Pilot .we dont know exactly the AI flight in which state is.They are old flights.condition of their Tyres ,and all these things should be considered.This is not first time AI skids.Remember the big incident some about 10years back?Once happened in Germany too, front tyre was fallen off and flight had hit building ,some damage was there.For long was a case,later it was not allowed to land in main but faraway.Just think why all these problems to our AI.second it is known in mangalore ,specially in rainy season ,difficult to land ,manoever ,have to use lot of skill.Thatswhy aviation dept must think something urgently to avoid second catastroph.Thank God all are safe.thank God Pilots skill.Thtas important at present.Best is these old maschines to dump in cemetry.

This shows how well the AAI has taken care of our city's airport. ATC staffs have very bad attitude as per the captains operating in and out of Mangalore.
AAI is collecting UDF from passengers and no development is taking place on the runway extension which forces the pilots to make hard landing. Blame must not be on cockpit crew, rather it must be on AAI directing board.

I request there a 2010 AirIndia Express crash investigation report available in google kindly read once if you have time , which point very in depth about Managalore IXE airport runway 06/24 length standard compliance and how exemptions were made as per regulating body recommendations and approved . Mr. Kishor nice comments and advise that "Level land is available in Padubidri/Mulky area. Government should build the International airport there ASAP and then Bajpe airport should be made a base for Air force or Navy or Coast guard." You think that our soldiers don't have family and life, that is why ur advising the airport should be made base for Air Force or Navy. Why People objected when government planned to construct airport at Padubidri and planned to acquire land at Palimar. Mangalore people objected coz they have to travel a long distance to board a flight and there will be no developments at Mangalore, Then Congentrix (NTPC) planned at the said land which also flopped. To extend the runway, no people are ready to give the land to AAI, Mangalore. People create problems and blame the govenment...

Then wahy cant Bajpe to be made a Cargo hub Airport along with defense base like Navy/Coastguard. The defense can operate in a shorter runways. Padubidri is equally middle. my suggestion Dr BR shetty might be interested. I m sure he will consider as a gift to his motherland

..... before commenting you should know the basics that 'Air force or Navy or Coast guard' planes does not longer runway to operate, hence there won't be any issue relating to 'soldiers family and life'
