Bantwal, May 18: In relation to a minor incident, a gang of miscreants entered several houses, went on a rampage and assaulted people on the night of Saturday May 16, at Nettarakere village near Farangipet in the taluk. Two houses were damaged and four people were admitted to a hospital with injuries, because of the disturbance created by the gang. The people of the area are fearful of recurrence of such incidents and additional police forces have been rushed to the spot.
The gang intercepted a pedestrian named Abubakker at Nettarakere Peruva in Tumbe village on Saturday night and abused him, using filthy language. As they tried to assault him, Abuabakker sought shelter in a nearby house belonging to Imtiaz. The gang entered Imtiaz's house and damaged television set, refrigerator, glass panes, tiles etc., besides beating up Imtiaz and Shamil. The gang then rushed to the house of Shamil, an advocate nearby and assaulted both Shamir and Hanif, besides damaging property there. In a complaint filed with the rural police station here, Abubakker said, the gang members, besides launching lethal assault on people with the help of wooden pieces, swords and iron rods, also damaged property worth over Rs 2.5 lac. Injured Shamil, Imtiaz, Shamir and Hanif are being treated in a local hospital.
A complaint has been registered against locals Damu, Bhaskar, Premnath, Jagga, Chandappa, Daya, Padma, Timmappa and several others. Reportedly, a dispute over borewell digging and election-related misgiving were the reasons for the assault.

4 held in connection with Mangalore attack
Bantwal police arrested four persons in connection with assault on a few people belonging to minority community on Sunday night.
The arrested are Prabhakar (30), Sudhakar (29), Yathish (18) and Seetharam (27), all residents of Bantwal.
According to the eye witnesses, a mob which was celebrating the victory of Nalin Kumar Kateel at Nettarakere in Bantwal police station limits, had a wordy duel with Aboobekker, a passerby and started assaulting him. However, he managed to flee and took shelter at his friend Sharief’s house. He then went to Sameer’s house, located in the vicinity. The mob first barged into Sharief’s house and later to Sameer’s house, assaulted the inmates and ransacked both the houses. Three persons who suffered injuries in the melee have been hospitalised.
