Udupi, Jun 27: An underground drainage that was dug at Kunjibettu near here, three months ago, while the work on national highway was in progress, is still not systematically done. In addition, the road constructions labourers have cut the drainage pipe connection that was given to a house nearby.

Due to this, the sewage water is flowing on the road and people around the area are bearing the brunt of foul smell. In addition, the area has become breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The people living in the area have put mosquito nets to their windows. Locals are questioning the work that is left half done before the onset of monsoon. Though this issue is brought to the notice of the Udupi city municipal council and the deputy commissioner, no action is taken so far. The locals have urged the concerned to take immediate action on the issue before contagious epidemic spreads in the area.

The NHAI is not bothered about the issue. If the same is questioned in the city municipal council, they have washed off their hands saying that they cannot do anything till the NHAI completes its work.

This is not the woe of Kunjibettu residents alone. Right from Kadiyali to Laxmindra Nagar, shabby work is done by the NHAI due to which the people are facing problems in the rainy season. If the concerned department does not take action, for sure, this area will be a bed of mosquito generated diseases.

City municipal council responds

The city municipal council, on Thursday, June 27, trying to save its face, sent workers in a vacuum truck to clear the mess. The workers tried hard to pump the sewage. Locals said that even after the action, water leakage was still there to be found. They also demanded a permanent solution to the problem.

When our contractors will learn professionalism?

They have to follow some basic fundamentals while constructing the road.

People have to go to court so that these contractors are punished with heavy penalty and compensation. Then they will learn.

Even the water channel (charandi) is waste job...the holes on the side of the charandi for the water to flow from the concrete road into the charandi are all blocked because of mud. The current holes are only 2 inch diameter instead of atleast 4 inch diameter and are haphazard ..and best joke is they have not made holes on the other (opposite) side of charandi for rain water to go inside. Neither is there any proper drainage for water and mud to flow leading to all of it entering people's compound. Instead of making people's lives easy they have made it worse..
