New Delhi, Jun 26: Former Kerala MP and legislator, A P Abdullakutty, who was thrown out of Congress for praising PM Narendra Modi for his massive victory, formally joined the saffron party on Wednesday evening.
He was inducted into the party by BJP working president J P Nadda, in presence of Union minister of state V Muraleedharan and Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrashekhar.
In his Facebook post titled "On Narendra Modi's impressive victory", Abdullakutty had praised Modi's development agenda, especially the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.' He said that the PM had adopted Gandhian values in governance and this factor was the secret for his success.
It would be interesting to note that in 2009, Abdullakutty was in the CPI (M). However, even during that time he was thrown out of the party for praising Narendra Modi who was then the Gujarat chief minister. He then joined the Congress.
The former MP was given the nickname Atbudakutty (wonder kid) after he ended the iron grip of six-time Congress MP Mullappally Ramachandran over the Kannur Lok Sabha seat in north Kerala under the banner of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) at the age of 31 in the 1999 general election. He continued as Kannur MP from Kannur till 2004. He also won Kannur Assembly seat in 2009 and 2011 as a Congress candidate, but lost the seat in 2016 to CPM.
