New permanent residency scheme for expats living in Saudi Arabia

Riyadh, Jun 24: A new residency scheme for expatriates was launched by Saudi Arabia on Sunday, June 23. This scheme is similar to the green card system which is commonly followed in other countries.

The new scheme is launched with an aim to attract the wealthy and high-skilled expats. It offers two types of residencies, a permanent one for 800,000 Saudi riyals (Dh 784,000) and the other with a year, but renewable residency for 100,000 Saudi riyals.

An online portal was opened for the interested individuals to apply. The scheme had been approved by the cabinet last month.

Through this scheme, expats will have the ability to own properties. Along with the benefits of owning properties, the foreign expats can do business in the kingdom.

In a report, it was found that over 10 million expats work and reside in Saudi Arabia under a system where they are required to be sponsored by a Saudi employer. Besides, they were also required to have an exit and re-entry visa issued whenever they want to leave the country.

    The offer is good for Americans because they are treated differently in KSA. Others, whether resident or not, the treatment may not be the same. The only purpose people go to these countries is to make money. These countries are developed, but poor. India is developing but rich. USA is both developed and rich. Who wants to settle down in a country where 90% citizen are dependent on imports for their daily needs. What about the national security? What about children's education? What about weather? If you want to live a dream, come to America ! But all are not welcome.

    Being born, living most of my life in Gulf, I can confidently state that "Even if One can buy Permanent Residency or some other similar thing, but never buy human dignity, human rights, and freedom of expression of any kind" in this part of the world, which is prone to volatility, abrupt change of laws, and economic uncertainty

    In general if the Gulf really wants to attract intellectuals and high net worth individuals from around the world, first and foremost they should drastically alter their thinking process. Full freedom as outlined in the West is the only way to go, the days of enforcing laws that don’t work have long gone. If they want people from over the world settle in the desert kingdom, I think they should start with bringing their tens of thousands of citizens who have settled in the West. The second they should give their woman full freedom, because as we speak Saudi woman are risking their lives to get asylum in the West, and if given a chance half of them would leave. Give Shite’s full and equal rights and most importantly NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

    Full freedom as outlined in the West and in many democratic countries will not come anytime soon mainly because for this tribal and primitive thinking that is NOT going to change anytime soon. India, Russia & China have many wealthy people and intellectuals that already have some sort of permanent visas or arrangements that they could relocate to the West at very short notice, so choosing to go to the Gulf with their draconian laws would be their last alternative.

    Good luck though, way to little, way too late.

    I agree to disagree with Mr. Santan Mascarenhas. also worked for ARAMCO, world's largest petroleum oil and allied products for nearly ten years, BUT remember that ARAMCO was then partially owned and run by American Oil Companies (like Socal etc.) and living in ARAMCO compounds was a totally different atmosphere and different country (like a country within a country) and we had total freedom, like swimming pools where ladies could swim in bikinis etc. and could follow/worship in any religion etc. like in America/Canada or Australia or even India! So one should understand that working in ARAMCO where Senior Staffs had family visas arranged and paid for by ARAMCO was a great privilege not given by all companies in Saudi Arabia!

    If Saudi promises no religious persecution of Christians and Hindus, give equal representation and rights to women, and lets people to buy pork and alcohol over there, am sure many indians would not mind getting PR there instead of Canada which is very cold and so far away from india.

    It is not brama's miracle but electric car ka chamatkar. Money makes everything merry go round. We all think Saudis are rich but what is the use. They want other rich people want to come to their country but they ignored so many war torned refugees where Europe and Canada sheltered them. Shame on so called rich who still want more money.

    Jossey, you may be having 10 year multiple visitor visa of USA. I and my family members have 10 year multiple visitor visa for Canada. After ten years, we can apply again for another 10 years. Let us not bother about people who want to go to Saudi Arabia.

    I never undermined the importance of going to gulf or KSA. In fact, I worked in Aramco, Saudi Arabia for 20 years. My comment was only related to the above article where after paying SR: 800,000 (about Rs 1.5 crores) and acquiring PR at KSA, which I feel is not worthwhile.
