Mangaluru, Jun 21: “Thirty-five youths from Mangaluru who had gone to Kuwait for employment and were cheated are suffering in Kuwait for the last six months. Arrangements are being made to bring them back soon,” said Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath.

Speaking in a press conference held at BJP office in Mangaluru, he said that the youths who had gone to Kuwait are struggling without proper jobs since the last six months. “I have spoken to them several times. I have assured them that I will bring them back to Mangaluru. Air tickets are arranged for them and they will be back in Mangaluru soon,” he assured.

“Discussions are already held about them with officials of Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I have spoken constantly with minister Sadananda Gowda and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel. Final phase of work to bring them back is in progress. Action will be taken by clearing the hurdles soon,” he said.

“Manikya Associates, the job placement company which had promised jobs to the youth in Kuwait has said that it will bear the cost of bringing the youths back. As air tickets are arranged, the problem will be solved in a few days,” he said.

In my knowledge, this case should have been referred to the Indian Embassy in Kuwait through the External Affairs Ministry.

The Indian Mission should be responsible for the employees in distress. The special service fees have been charged from each member of the NRI for the services offered by the mission abroad.

If this case went through the proper official channel the employees should not have waited for six long months in agony.
But this is not a single isolated case. There are several unreported cases in whoich employer or agency offered better pay but ended in menial jobs.
The countries like Philipines and Indonesia has better employment guarantees and welfare comparing to India which yet learn from the mistakes.

How much did each one pay Manikya Associates for the job offer in Kuwait? Is it not more than the ticket cost? A good agency will check if the job is genuine or not before sending in applicants.
