The theft came to light on Tuesday morning, but Shetty, who arrived from Bangalore that morning, could not properly assess the value of gold ornaments stolen, as his wife, who was in Bangalore then, along had full knowledge about them.
Hima Urmila Shetty, Shetty's wife, came back from Bangalore on the evening of Tuesday May 12. After a thorough assessment, the value of ornaments stolen has been put at Rs 1, 84, 35,000. Some of the ornaments were rare, old, intricately carved ornaments belonging to the mother of Dr M R Shetty.
Hima had brought the ornaments from bank locker in view of the wedding ceremonies to be attended later, and after keeping them at home, she had gone to Bangalore on a visit to her parental home. The thieves had entered the home by removing the plank of the rear door, and after breaking 10 out of the 12 almirahs found there, had taken away valuables. If the robbers had succeeded in breaking open the other almirahs too, they could have accessed more jewellery.
The policemen initially questioned the workers of the house. So far, they have not got any clues about the robbery, it is learnt.
