Panaji, May 8: The serial killer’s wife has said that her husband is innocent and may be not involved in any of the killings, for which he is accused of.
“Hang him, if he is a sinner but I am sure he won’t be involved. He was such a nice guy back home, he can’t do this,” Pooja Naik, wife of Mahanand Naik, accused of killing five women, told reporters at Ponda police station on Thursday.
Pooja, working at Ela Farm, a venture of central government, said that her husband was eking out living by doing some odd jobs. “He was very helpful. He never assaulted or shouted at me. He can’t kill an ant, how can he be involved in such heinous crimes?,” she questioned.
The woman who got married to Mahanand three years back has a one and half year old daughter.
Mahanand was arrested by Ponda police in the last week of April for allegedly raping his wife’s friend. Later during the interrogation, he confessed of killing five women while police are investigating his links in the five other cases of young women missing from Ponda town locality.
“She is not my friend. We had not met her for three and half years. I don’t know from where the accusation of rape surfaced against him (Mahanand),” Pooja said.
Pooja said that she lost everything when an angry mob burnt down her house at Taravalem village near Ponda where Mahanand used to stay.
The irate mob turned wild after Mahanand went on confessing about his killings in Ponda police station.
“I have no shelter over my head. I had constructed the house with much pain and savings,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ponda police who are interrogating Mahanand on daily basis in the lock up said that he has confessed of killing five women - Darshan Naik (1994), Vasanti Gawade (1995), Kesar Naik (2007), Nayana Gaonkar (2008) and Yogita Naik (2009).
They are also probing the deaths of Anjani Gaonkar (2005), Surat Gaonkar (2006), Deepali Jotkar (2006), Nirmala Gaonkar (2006) and Gulabi Gaonkar (1994) besides other cases of disappearance.
