Goa's Fire Department Keen to Recruit Women for Operational Duties

Panaji, Apr 27: Goa’s Fire and Emergency Services Department has moved the file to change its recruitment rules so as to allow women join the operational duties.
 
“The department has no women in operational duties. We have moved the file to change the recruitment rules to the Home Department,” Ashok Menon, Director, Fire and Emergency services said. .
 
He said that the department has already changed the terminology from  firemen to fire fighters so that the women can be recruited.
 
Menon said that the proposal to change the RRS is forwarded to the Home Department who will sanction it after vetting it from law department and other related offices. 
 
The fire department currently has 249 fire fighters, all males, who are on the operational duties. They are mostly posted at various stations. The department has 12 fire stations across the state.
 
The Director said that once inducted in the force, the women can be attached to training duties, fire prevention activities, control room and also can be asked for fire fighting.
 
The fire and Emergency services department has 527 people attached to various duties including administrative work.
 
The force has 28 watch room operators, 22 drivers, 64 leading fire fighters, 30 sub officers and 19 station fire officers.
