Bengaluru, May 28: In a terrific accident which happened at Kogilu Cross flyover near the international airport here at 12.45 am on Monday May 28, five members of a family died after an ambulance hit the car they were travelling in.
The deceased were Dipankar Dey (45), Swagata Chaudhary (47), Sujaya (45), Jayathi (65) and Dhruv Dey (14). They were the residents of R T Nagar here and were returning home as their flight was cancelled. The ambulance driver, identified as Channabasappa, suffered serious injuries. He is being treated in a hospital here.
Dipankar Dey from West Bengal had come to the city with wife, Swagata and son, Dhruv Dey a few years back and settled down in R T Nagar. He was employed in a private company here. His wife was teacher in Jain international school. Dhruv was studying in the school where his mother was a teacher.
Sujaya was the sister of Swagata. She was employed at Chennai. Her mother, Jayathi, stayed with Sujaya. A few days back, Sujaya and Jayathi had come here to stay with Dey family. They had booked tickets by a 11 pm flight to Chennai on Sunday. Dey and family had come to the airport in their car to drop them. Because of heavy rain coupled with strong wind, the flight was rescheduled to 6.30 am the next day. Therefore, the family was returning home.
When the car was moving on Kogilu cross flyover, the ambulance driven by Channabassappa moving towards the airport collided with the car. The police had to use crane to separate the vehicles. By then all occupants of the car had died, the police said.
It is said that the ambulance driver was recklessly driving the vehicle. He was trying to overtake a truck when he lost control over the vehicle. The ambulance then jumped over the divider, moved erratically, and hit the car coming from the opposite direction.
