Udupi, May 14: Repair of national highway No. 169A Agumbe ghat road that connects three districts of Malnad and the coast, has been completed. The road will be open for use by light vehicles from May 16 onward.

The ghat road had suffered widespread damages during the previous rainy season. Vehicular traffic had been banned on the road beginning from April 1 this year to facilitate undertaking repair works. Work on protective walls and concreting have been completed except the seventh road bend.

The work was expected to be completed with a month but permission of the forest department was delayed. Therefore there was delay by a few days even though traffic was closed since April 1 and men, materials and machinry were kept ready to undertake repairs. However, as there was a need to see that the road work is completed before the monsoon season began, the concerned have hastened through the work, it is gathered.

The work of building concrete road with protective wall at the 14th bend where a platform was created to view the setting sun, is currently on. The officials said that heavy vehicles can move on this road from June 1 onward as currently curing of concrete road is on and movement of heavy vehicles can damage these stretches. Mini buses, passenger vehicles two-wheelers, ambulances and other light vehicles can move about on the road from May 16 itself, they added.
