Wellington, Apr 8: Shane Bond's plans of working towards a Test comeback in case the rebel Indian Cricket League fails to honour his contract have delighted national coach Andy Moles, who feels the pacer's return would be a big boost to the Kiwi attack.
Bond has expressed his renewed commitment to domestic cricket after the global economic slump forced the ICL to cancel its tournament this year, thereby putting a question mark on its future amid reports that the cash-strapped league was contemplating releasing its contracted players.
The right-arm speedster, who has been barred from playing for the national team because of his association with the ICL, has indicated that he plans to play a full season for his state side Canterbury in 2009-10.
"If he was available I'm sure the selectors would look favourably because he gives us that extra pace," Moles was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Press Association.
The 33-year-old Bond played the last of his 67 ODIs against West Indies at the World Cup two years back, while he featured in the last of his 17 Tests against South Africa in Johannesburg in November, 2007.
Another ICL-aligned pacer, Daryl Tuffey, who took 23 first-class wickets at an average of 18.91 for Auckland this season ahead of the State Championship final, was also on the radar of the Kiwi coach.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan welcomed the prospect of ICL players return to the national fold.
"You want your national team to include the very best players and I think it's quite clear we haven't been able to do that in recent times," he said.
